Parks and
Recreation Overview
The
City of Niles provides numerous public parks at locations throughout
the City. Most parks include playground equipment and picnic
facilities. They are:
- Birkholm
Park, at Clarendon and 14th (Playground and picnic
facilities)
- Cass
Street Park, located at Cass and 8th Sts. (Play structures,
tetherball, basketball court, picnic facilities)
- Plym
Park, at Marmont and Plym Park Rd. (Play structures, picnic
shelter, tennis, soccer, softball, basketball)
- Eagle St. Park, at Eagle and 5th (Playground)
- Tot Park, at Pokagon and 11th (Playground)
- Eastside Park, at 17th and Sycamore St. (Play structure,
picnic shelter, softball/baseball, basketball)
- Saathoff Park, at Maple and 9th St. (Playground, soccer,
basketball)
- Clevenger Park, at Cherry and 5th (Play structure, picnic
shelter)
- Riverfront Parks, along the east side of the St. Joseph River
from Wayne to Fort St. (Boat ramp, play structure, skate park,
amphitheater, walking trails, picnic facilities/shelters)
- Island Park (entrance off Parkway, south of Broadway) (Walk
bridge to island, picnic shelter, playground equipment)
- Marmont St. Boat Ramp, at Marmont St. at the St. Joseph River
(Boat ramp)
- Southside Park, at 15th and Silverbrook Ave. (Play structure,
baseball, basketball, picnic shelter)
- Troost Park, at 8th and Ferry St. (Playground)
- Thomas Stadium, at Silverbrook Ave. and 11th St. (baseball
stadium only)
- F.O.P Park, at F.O.P. Dr. and State St. (baseball only)
A nine member Parks and Recreation board serves in
an advisory capacity, meeting on the fourth Tuesday of each month at
7:00 pm at the City Council chambers, which are adjacent to the
Niles fire station, 1345 East Main St. The public is invited to
attend. The board assists with planning for park improvement or
expansion projects, parks maintenance, etc.; establishes rules and
regulations regarding park use; and advises on the replacement of
park equipment.
A summer park program for area youth is popular in June, July and
early August and is held at Plym Park, located on the city's north
side.
A summer concert series is held at the Amphitheater just north of
Main St. on the river in June, July and August. Concerts are
financially supported by the City of Niles, Arts Council of Greater
Kalamazoo, Inc., and the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural
Affairs.
