Michael T. McCauslin

Hi, and welcome to the City of Niles’ government page.  My name is Mike McCauslin and I have the pleasure of serving as Mayor of this exciting community.

I am in my third four year term as Mayor.  I have previously served our community in various capacities including council member and Mayor Pro-tem.  Additionally, I serve as a board member of the Southwestern Michigan Economic Growth Alliance.

My wife Lucy and I have two sons, Thomas and John.  Both are currently students, Thomas is in college and John attends Niles High School.  Lucy and I have made the Niles area our home for over twenty three years.

Our City government philosophy is to serve the citizens and promote growth and progress in our community.  We are actively achieving our goals through the combined efforts of all of our stakeholders, by being proactive in the greater Niles community, and by sharing a common vision for the future of our community.  We are most fortunate in our community to have a professional and dedicated City staff with a wide range of abilities and expertise.

Daniel VandenHeede

Hello, my name is Dan VandenHeede and I represent Niles' second ward.  I have served on the Niles City Council since 1999 and have lived my entire life in Niles, except while attending college.  I graduated from Niles High School in 1986.  In college I majored in education and history as an undergraduate. I completed  my masters in history at Western Michigan University.

I am a social studies and art teacher at Dowagiac Union High School in nearby Dowagiac, Michigan.  Teaching civics to my high school students has given me a new appreciation for how our government works and the importance of getting involved. I decided to run for a seat on the Niles City Council  because I want to be a part of the continued progress Niles has made over the past few years and also because I desire to make sure that our citizens' wishes are heard.  My term as second ward Council Member began on  November 8, 1999.

I have a wonderful wife, Jodie.  We have three children, Elizabeth, Sam and Kate.  Elizabeth attends Niles High School, Sam is a student at Ring Lardner Middle School and Kate goes to the Oak Manor 6th Grade Center.

If you wish to contact me you may do so by e-mail at dvanden@qtm.net or by calling me at home at 269-684-4642.

Betty Arndt

Hello, my name is Betty Arndt, and I was elected to represent the 3rd Ward in Nov 2007.   I have lived in Niles for 16 years and this is the first time I have held an elective office.   I was born and raised in Harbor Beach Michigan.  After serving 8 years with the U.S. Air Force, I decided to attend college full time to obtain my R.N. license.  I settled in Niles after completing my degree and am currently employed at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, IN.

My husband of 14 years, John Hurt, is a Niles native, and my two sons, Alex and Marc attend Eastside Elementary.

Niles is a wonderful place to raise a family!  Chicago is a day trip away, Lake Michigan beaches only 30 minutes from home,  we have a school system with caring teachers, and Niles itself is steeped in history,  traditions, and many family friendly activities.

I am proud to call Niles my hometown!  I enjoy listening to other’s thoughts and ideas on how to keep Niles as a great place to live.  You can contact me at bettyjarndt@comcast.net or phone 269-684-3630.
